MTV is returning to the scene of the party. For the second straight year, mtvU's Spring Break week will set up shop at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas from March 20 to 22. MTV Networks will be poolside with multi-platinum rapper Young Jeezy, MTV Artist to Watch 2012 Dev and U.K. boy-band sensation the Wanted.

Additionally, a resident DJ will be on hand to entertain the flocks of college students making their pilgrimage to Sin City. Spring breakers will have access to exclusive screening parties with MTV celebrities Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Deena Nicole Cortese from "Jersey Shore," as well as Leroy and Naomi from "The Challenge: Battle of the Exes."

Young Jeezy heads to Las Vegas in the wake of his Gold-certified fourth studio album, "Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition," which yielded the #1 urban smash "I Do." Electropop singer Dev will be previewing songs from her anticipated March release, The Night the Sun Came Up." U.K. band the Wanted heads to Spring Break after being named an MTV Push artist. They recently concluded a tour with Justin Bieber.

mtvU Spring Break 2012 marks MTV's second-consecutive year at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. MTV has a long-standing, close relationship with Las Vegas that's full of big moments and epic performances. MTV's first trip to Vegas took place in 2002 when seven strangers came together in "Real World 12: Las Vegas." The network ruled Vegas all summer in 2005 with MTV's "Summer on the Strip," and in 2007, the MTV Video Music Awards" took over the Palms Casino Resort.

Justin Bieber Should 'Stay Strong,' Usher Says

'All of this comes with the territory,' Ush tells MTV News of paternity-suit drama.

<P><a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> might not have known how big <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> would become when he discovered him a few years back, but he was pretty sure he had found something special. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712878" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Since Bieber burst on the scene with his <i>My World</i> EP back in 2009, the 17-year-old has grown up with the world watching. He's gone from up-and-comer to full-fledged pop sensation, racking up chart-topping albums and a box-office hit and becoming an all-around mega-heartthrob &#8212; all in two years. Of course, with the good does come negative attention as well. Recently, Bieber was hit with a <a href="/news/articles/1674509/justin-bieber-paternity-suit-dropped-2.jhtml">paternity lawsuit, which has since been dropped</a>. Usher, no stranger to his own controversies, had these words for the Biebs: "Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory." Aside from the drama, Usher is especially proud of Bieber's charitable side. His mentor said he "absolutely" knew the kid from Stratford, Ontario, had a big heart from the start. "To write a check is only half of it, but when you truly take on a responsibility to be a philanthropist, you accept an effort, and I really think that Pencils of Promise is something that has a very bright future," <a href="/news/articles/1674628/justin-bieber-new-york-city.jhtml">Usher told MTV News at an event for the charity</a>, noting that Bieber is a only a small part of it. Usher &#8212; who appears on Bieber's new Christmas album, <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml"><i>Under the Mistletoe</i></a> &#8212; gives credit to the folks surrounding the teen superstar, including manager Scooter Braun. "Just judging from the determination and the will power of the entire team around Justin, I see a very, very promising [future] for him as a philanthropist," Usher said.</p>

Oscars 2012 Ratings Up From Last Year

Ratings for Sunday night's telecast up 4 percent over 2011's show.
By Gil Kaufman

Sometimes "meh" is all you need — especially when you're following up one of the most reviled Oscar hosting teams in recent memory.

That might explain why, despite a night devoid of any major surprises or blockbuster winners, ratings for the 2012 Oscars telecast were up slightly over last year.

According to ABC's preliminary ratings, the Billy Crystal-hosted awards show had a 25.5 rating and 37 share, a 4 percent increase over the 2011 show, which famously bombed thanks to the lack of chemistry between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Crystal's safe-as-milk ninth go-round as host earned the veteran comedian mostly tepid to negative reviews, but it was enough to boost the big night to one of its best ratings nights since 2007, when the show put up a 27.7 rating and 42 share.

The highest-ever Oscar ratings came in 1998, when the global blockbuster "Titanic" helped draw in more than 55 million viewers.

Ratings might have been even higher if any of the most-nominated movies had posted solid box-office figures as well. But between them, the leading winners, "The Artist" and "Hugo," which both reveled in a nostalgic look back at the dawn of the modern movie era, have grossed just over $100 million combined to date. To put that in perspective, popcorn flick "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which was blanked in three technical categories, brought in nearly that much in its opening weekend.

More complete ratings numbers are expected later in the day on Monday (February 27).

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Keep it locked at MTV.com for updates on the night's big winners and the best red-carpet fashion.

Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler in "That's My Boy"
Photo: Columbia Pictures

Peanut butter and jelly, popcorn and movies, baseball and springtime — all winning combinations that never fail to put a smile on your face. On June 15, 2012, you'll be able to add another prized combo to that list: Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg.

The two "Saturday Night Live" legends are joining forces for a new Happy Madison comedy called "That's My Boy," hitting theaters this June. In the film, Sandler stars as a down-on-his luck man trying to reconnect with his estranged family on the week of his son's (Samberg) wedding. It's a bizarre setup — after all, Sandler is only 12 years older than Samberg in real life — but, as one would hope, the film offers a reliably ridiculous explanation for the small age gap.

If the basic premise and the involvement of actors Sandler and Samberg don't have you fired up for "That's My Boy," just wait: The first official trailer is set to drop on MTV.com on Thursday, and Samberg himself couldn't be more excited for it.

"I never thought I would actually get to be in a movie with Sandler, certainly not playing his son," Samberg told MTV News ahead of the trailer's release. "For me, I've been such a huge fan of his for so long; I used to listen to 'Billy Madison' on audio cassette in my Walkman. I'm a real-deal Sandler fan. I'd definitely put [this experience] up there with being cast on 'SNL' or any of the other things I've gotten to do — making [Lonely Island] records with my buddies — things I've always dreamed of happening but never thought they would. I'm pretty psyched."

As a self-declared "real-deal Sandler fan," Samberg was far from disappointed when it came to watching the comedy legend do his thing on the "That's My Boy" set.

"Sandler is basically on fire in this movie," he said. "In real life, he's about the sweetest dad I've ever seen. But in the movie, he's a bit of a train wreck. If we were making a documentary, it would be called 'Sweet Loving Dad.' But I think ['That's My Boy'] is going to be a little bit more entertaining and edgy than that."

Stay tuned to MTV News on Thursday for the "That's My Boy" trailer premiere!

Check out everything we've got on "That's My Boy."

Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey Play Santa In 'Christmas' Clip

Bieber debuts 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' video (and performs with Busta Rhymes and Usher) during 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center.'

<P>Deck the halls! The holiday kicked into high gear Wednesday night (November 30) when New York's massive Christmas tree was lit during "Christmas in Rockefeller Center." Plenty of A-listers were on hand, including Justin Bieber, who premiered his highly anticipated <a href="/news/articles/1673689/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-video.jhtml">video for "All I Want for Christmas Is You,"</a> featuring Mariah Carey. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:715720" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Before the strings of lights were illuminated, performances from Michael Bubl&#233;, Katharine McPhee, Big Time Rush, Tony Bennett, Carole King and Neil Diamond warmed viewers up. But Bieber was the headline act of the night, giving fans some big performances and an even bigger video premiere. Bieber amped up the energy with his hip-hop-ified take on the Christmas classic <a href="/news/articles/1673334/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-song.jhtml">"Little Drummer Boy,"</a> which included him spitting a holiday-themed rhyme. Decked in all black, the teen star had the crowd screaming. He was even joined by Busta Rhymes, who appears on the <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> cut. JB then slowed things down with <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),"</a> leaving his female fans swooning as he crooned the holiday standard. He was joined by his mentor Usher for the track. "God bless and Merry Christmas," Bieber told the crowd before tossing to the "All I Want for Christmas Is You" video. The clip features Mariah Carey dressed in a sexy Santa Claus outfit standing in a department store as she dances around singing the track, almost as if she's on display for holiday shoppers. It also sees Bieber and his pals shopping for some choice holiday gifts like high-top kicks. In between performance shots of Bieber and Mariah, a street-corner Santa Claus hands out envelopes to shoppers on the street, teasing an inevitable yuletide party scene. The shoppers are then welcomed into the department store, where Justin and Mariah hand out gifts to everyone. The duo tease and flirt with each other as everyone around them unwraps their gifts. Bieber and Carey re-recorded her classic holiday tune for his chart-topping holiday album, which also features appearances from the Band Perry and Boyz II Men. They filmed the video earlier this month, just in time for the holiday season. <i>Did Bieber get you in the holiday spirit? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

Photo: MTV News

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin. In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-to-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday. </p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p> But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic &#8212; the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" &#8212; for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine. "I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' &#8212; it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun." Blige also said she recorded another new song &#8212; a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" &#8212; for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon. "I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

'X Factor' Michael Jackson Night Has Singers On Edge

Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has been absent from the set since her final group was eliminated last week.
By Jim Cantiello

<P><P><P><i>MTV News' own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering "The X Factor" rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report!</i> <b>LOS ANGELES</b> &#8212; "The X Factor" top seven are back on the lot after their first (and only) mini-vacation of the season. And as the Thanksgiving tryptophan wears off, the anxiety of another double elimination is setting in. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714741" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Adding to the stress? "The X Factor" is tackling the songs of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> on Wednesday night (November 30), on the 29th anniversary of <i>Thriller</i>'s release, no less. One of the contestants is so stressed over the theme he's emerged as a total perfectionist. During Monday's rehearsals, he had already nixed multiple arrangements the show had provided him. "This is the most unprepared I've felt on a Monday," he said to his mentor as they rushed out of Stage 36. There was a camera crew chasing them to capture the drama &#8212; as well as the ensuing late-night emergency meeting with the vocal coaches &#8212; so don't be surprised if some of this intense footage ends up in your living room. (This afternoon's dress rehearsal went swimmingly, for the record.) Meanwhile, one contestant had a full-on battle with his/her mentor over a chair. The mentor said, "Sit and sing." The contestant said, "Again?! How about I do something on my feet for Michael Jackson week?" Another mentor came to the defense of the contestant. In the end, the contestant is sitting after all. Don't worry, contestant. The eerie arrangement of an MJ classic is what folks are going to be buzzing about. No one will care if you sit or stand. In the control room, I spied one of the bigwigs utter the word "brilliant!" after the contestant's dress rehearsal. Another hot topic: wardrobe! When paying homage to one of the biggest music icons ever, it's tempting for the stylists to include clothing nods to Michael's various looks. But several singers are worried they'll look too much like Jackson impersonators, which has caused many a headache in the wardrobe trailer. But stylist June Ambrose is still able to keep things light in the midst of the drama. While waiting around for a contestant's last-minute fitting, she started an impromptu MJ dance party on the lot. Crotch grabs and "woo" included! Lastly, Paula Abdul's sunny energy has been noticeably absent on the CBS lot now that all her groups have been eliminated. She went from being the most hands-on mentor to an on-set ghost. "The X Factor" family can't wait to welcome her back for her first live show as strictly a judge. What do you think she's been doing with her newfound free time? <b>You can catch Jim on the "X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show," streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on <a href="http://www.thexfactorusa.com/" target="_blank">TheXFactorUSA.com</a>!</b></p></p></p>

<P>On November 1, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> will take his fans <a href="/news/articles/1672827/justin-bieber-under-the-mistletoe.jhtml"><i>Under the Mistletoe</i></a> on his holiday album. But he's giving them an early treat by releasing his <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> duet, "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," on Monday (October 24). </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1672718" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The song dropped on Ryan Seacrest's <a href="http://ryanseacrest.com/2011/10/24/usher-premieres-duet-with-justin-bieber-chestnuts-over-an-open-fire-audio/" target="_blank">radio show</a>. Its vibe is reminiscent of '90s R&B tracks, and it sounds a lot like it could have been recorded by Boyz II Men, who also appear on the album. The Christmas classic is all about the little joys of the holiday season, including the family get-togethers, the food and Santa bringing presents to children. The song, one of the classics that appears on the album, hits iTunes on Monday. Bieber and Usher previously appeared together on "Somebody to Love" off <i>My World 2.0.</i> "Justin and I did the classic record 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' This record is going to be remembered for years to come," Usher told Seacrest on Monday morning. "It's a record that has always been one of my favorites, and I'm happy that I was able to share it with Justin, and for us to put it out. The album is full of surprises. Justin's <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> is going to be incredible!" In the lead-up to the release, Bieber <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128163827832467456" target="_blank">released</a> some behind-the-scenes footage of his mentor and him in the studio working on the song. Just one week after dropping the video for "Mistletoe," he <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128479978106003456" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Up early to shoot another video for #UNDERTHEMISTLETOE #Nov1st but something else is out this morning...." Joan Rivers on Angelina Jolie: Idiotic, Auschwitz-Like!

Joan Rivers is not known for mincing words, but she took it to a new level after the 2012 Oscars, describing Angelina Jolie in some very controversial terms.

Angelina’s bizarre on-stage leg thrust pose pretty much stole the show Sunday, but not necessarily in a good way, drawing criticism and hilarious parodies galore.

Most were in good fun, but Fashion Police star Rivers tore her a new one.

“Angelina Jolie looked like a fool the way she posed,” Rivers said.

“She took herself right out of that superstar category because you now realize she stands in front of a mirror to figure out [what she looks like.]”

Daughter Melissa Rivers agreed: “She was demystified! She demystified herself and it’s unfortunate because it always looks so effortless. You're thinking, how can this one individual be so glamorous? It’s because she practices!”

Joan continued her rant against Angelina and her leg ...

“Have you ever seen anybody stand with their hand on a hip with a leg thrown out to open an envelope? No. and you want to say, you idiot!"

"You brought us back to the fact and we’ve all forgotten that you used to wear blood around your neck and French kiss your brother!”

Angelina Jolie at the Oscars

She's not a fan, suffice it to say ... but then things got weird.

When asked whether Angelina Jolie is too skinny, Rivers commented on the actress' thin arms, saying that she “looks like Auschwitz adjacent.”

NOTE TO ASPIRING COMEDIANS: Among the topics you probably don't need to broach in order to make your point? Concentration camps.

Justin Bieber's Top 18 Moments Kicks Off!

Oh, Baby! Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we're counting down his best moments so far starting with #18 to #14.

<P>As <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> gears up for his 18th birthday this week, we at MTV News decided we'd help our guy celebrate the milestone by looking back on <i>18</i> of his greatest moments so far. Whether he's dazzling us with killer performances, topping the box office <i>and</i> the <i>Billboard</i> charts or just dropping yet another memorable music video, the Biebs has kept us talking since he first rose to super fame way back in 2009. Of course, actually narrowing down all of those moments was no easy task. Our list had to include career successes as well as personal achievements, and the pop star has had no shortage of either. But we put our heads together for the Beliebers. We'll celebrate every day leading up to the final reveal on Justin's big day, Thursday, March 1. What will be the #1 moment? You'll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:743868.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>18. The 2012 Oscars</b></big><br> No, "Never Say Never" wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but Justin still managed to snag a few headlines at this year's show. Bieber popped up in the show's <a href="/news/articles/1679954/oscars-2012-justin-bieber-opening.jhtml">opener with host Billy Crystal</a> in a sketch that paid homage to Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris." Dressed up in formal wear, Bieber shared what seemed to be longing glances with Crystal. The singer also showed his flair for comedy, giving more proof that he's a true triple threat. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:626820.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>17. Bieber's Love Life</b></big><br> Teen superstar <a href="/news/articles/1679812/oscar-couples-justin-bieber-selena-gomez.jhtml">Bieber dating Disney princess Selena Gomez</a> has sparked lots of headlines. Selena has always been the mature one in this relationship &#8212; she turns 20 in July &#8212; so it might take some pressure off having Justin join in her adulthood. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:496216.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>16. MTV News was on hand at Lucky Strike in New York City as the Biebs tried to beat Cannon. Tons of adoring fans also showed up to cheer on the floppy-haired star. In the end, despite Nick's big pre-game talk, it was Bieber who won. And Beliebers can probably take credit for helping him to victory! </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:685409.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>15. No, not Selena, who was MTV's red-carpet co-host, but his pet snake, Johnson. (The metaphor was not lost on anyone.) Justin actually seemed to creep out his lady when he unveiled the creepy crawler, and we couldn't stop talking about it. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:667570.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>14. The iconic department store was filled mostly with female fans hoping to get spritzed by the star, and we found out he cares a lot about how they smell. "I just think that what we decided to do &#8212; making the fragrance for females, not getting a cologne for males &#8212; I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm more concerned about how girls smell 'cause I'm a guy," Justin explained to MTV News. "And I know what smells good and I know what I like, so girls should know if [I like] it, then other guys are going to like it." <i>Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page!</i> <b>Stick with MTV News all week as we count down <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. Anne Hathaway Talks Lindsay Lohan

She?s largely avoided any public scandal or personal breakdown, but Anne Hathaway still says she can relate to Lindsay Lohan.

During an interview, the ?Princess Diaries? starlet shared why she feels so similar to the troubled ?Mean Girls? tabloid target.

Anne began, "Lindsay Lohan and I have more in common than people think. We've all done things we shouldn't. It is just that I did stuff at college when nobody knew about it, so I'm not a saint. I wasted time doing self-destructive things."

"I found you can only dance on so many table tops. I got all that out of my system and I am healthy and grounded."

And Ms. Hathaway credits her mom for being so well-adjusted. "My mother, Kate McCauley, taught me to be always understanding of other people -- and to have a sense of humor about yourself."

"Mom has also encouraged me not to be one of those people who worry about weight. I know when people refer to me as a 'regular' girl, that it is a code word for 'fat' in Hollywood. It is completely understandable, as a teenager, to fret about your body. It is scary, because you don't know how it is going to end up. But I am not a teenager any more and my body has chosen its shape. I would rather be strong than skinny."

'Glee' Michael Jackson Episode: Rumored Set List Leaks

<P>"Glee" has already dedicated entire episodes to <a href="/news/articles/1637098/madonna-gives-props-to-glee-episode.jhtml">Madonna</a>, <a href="/news/articles/1648829/britney-spears-glee-episode-everything-you-need-to-know.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1639871/glee-lady-gaga-episode-is-fantastic-matthew-morrison-says.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>, and come 2012, it's the King of Pop's turn. A rumored set list for the January 24 "Glee" Michael Jackson tribute episode has hit the Web, and it features some of the late singer's greatest hits. <a href="http://perezhilton.com/2011-12-27-glee-michael-jackson-tribute-episode-setlist#.TvoRm0rkk7A" target="_blank">Perez Hilton</a> reports that 14 tracks have made the final cut, although the list has yet to be confirmed by anyone connected with the show. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:549513.id:1645343" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The set list (along with who will perform the track) reportedly includes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " (Blaine), "Bad" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (Finn and Rachel), "Smooth Criminal" (Santana and Sebastian), "Never Can Say Goodbye" (Quinn), "In the Closet" (Brittany and Santana), "We Are the World" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "Black and White" (Puck), "Ghost"/"Monster" (New Directions), "Beat It"/"Billie Jean" (Warblers), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Kurt) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (Artie). This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the <a href="/news/articles/1657395/glee-thriller.jhtml">New Directions performed his track "Thriller,"</a> complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Man in the Mirror." Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2010/08/09/glee-michael-jackson/">episode dedicated to Jackson</a>. "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song." While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. "That's a scary, scary episode to do," she said. "[But] that would be absolutely amazing." <i>Are you happy with the rumored set list? What's missing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!</i></p>

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News

<P><a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a>'s already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/17/kesha-drinks-blood-during-performance" target="_blank">guzzling blood</a> out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most <i>theatrical</i> era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s. Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual <a href="/news/articles/1663909/wango-tango-britney-spears-kesha.jhtml">Wango Tango</a> concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout <i>Animal</i> album (and, we suppose, <a href="/news/articles/1652714/kehas-cannibal-a-cheat-sheet.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i></a> too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much <i>everything</i> else. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:652875" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it." So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc. "I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it." <i>What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Oscars 2012: Just Like Grammys, But With More Leg

Why the contest between the year's two biggest awards shows wasn't really much of a contest at all, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Angelina Jolie presents at the 84th annual Academy Awards
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

There was a wardrobe malfunction, some racy fashion, a bit of onstage inebriation, a little pre-show punking and even a Justin Bieber sighting ... and none of it was enough to spare Sunday's 84th Academy Awards from being called "as bland as oatmeal" and a "badly paced bore-fest."

Those criticisms may or may not have been deserved; after all, the three-hour-and-something telecast certainly lagged in spots, most of Billy Crystal's shtick seemed to have been vacuum-sealed during the latter days of the Carter administration and the most memorable moments centered on supposed nipple sips and Angelina Jolie's right leg. And, shoot, it's not like there was a whole lot of suspense involved with the show itself; everyone knew "The Artist" was a lock to win Best Picture, and, lo and behold, it did just that.

Still, there were highlights— Emma Stone's charming (and well-written) presentation bit opposite Ben Stiller, Octavia Spencer's gob-smacked Best Supporting Actor acceptance speech (and frequent near spills beforehand), Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis' cymbal-smashing stunt — but overall, consensus seems to hold that this year's Oscar telecast was too bloated, too straight-laced and too self-reverent. In other words, it was just like every other Oscar telecast, only with accidental nudity and some Cirque du Soleil thrown in at the last minute.

Which is why, after sifting through the aftermath of the show itself, I can't help but notice the similarities between the Oscars and the 54th Grammy Awards, which unspooled earlier this month and were greeted with the same basic criticisms immediately afterward: feckless host, lifeless pacing, predictable results. And while comparing Billy Crystal to LL Cool J is basically a futile endeavor (Crystal was funnier, but LL bested him when it came to prayer-leading and headwear), it's not exactly a stretch to call both telecasts long-winded, or make the connection between "The Artist" and Adele.

Of course, some (like, uh, me) have already floated the notion that the Oscars and the Grammys are basically the same show anyway — both are slightly silly, thoroughly incomprehensible exercises in self congratulation — though, for what it's worth, I actually enjoyed Sunday's Oscars way more than this year's Grammys. I thought the former was a better show, more creatively staged, and certainly more adept playing the hand it was dealt.

To wit: Producers went into Sunday's Oscarcast having already weathered the Brett Ratner/Eddie Murphy bad-press fiesta, and knowing that a) this year's crop of nominated-films weren't exactly compelling, b) a (largely) silent, black-and-white film was the odds-on favorite, c) their host was born in 1948, and d) they were opposite the NBA All-Star Game. Forget about "cool" ... about the best thing the Oscars could hope for was "classy," and in that regard, they definitely delivered.

On the other hand, heading into the Grammys, the presumptive favorite had also sold nearly 7 million albums (about as close as a consensus as you can get these days), one of the most-popular hip-hop artists on the planet was the night's most-nominated act (that would be Kanye West), and three of the world's biggest pop stars (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rihanna) were all in attendance. Oh, and then, on the night before the show itself, Whitney Houston — one of the greatest singers of all time, and a talent whose entire career was basically interwoven with the history of the award — unexpectedly died. If anything, the show was set up to be one for the ages.

And yet, it largely wasn't. Sure, Adele soared and scored, but everyone else in the previous paragraph was basically an afterthought. And the tribute to Houston, featuring a very game Jennifer Hudson, was buried in the telecast and largely forgotten by the following morning. Combine all that with an odd Nicki Minaj performance, that whole "EDM" tribute and a thorough bungling of the annual "In Memoriam" piece, and the Grammys were a debacle in just about every conceivable way (except for Dave Grohl, of course, who was awesome as always).

So if these two awards shows really are so similar, well, for one year at least, they weren't. The Oscars definitely out-gunned, out-shone, and even managed to out-Grammy the Grammys themselves. There was a slight spirit of irreverence (Angelina's leg show, Sacha Baron Cohen's ash-spilling stunt, the boozy "Bridesmaids" salute to Marty Scorsese) that permeated throughout the buttoned-up proceedings. They even got Justin Bieber involved, and the last time I checked, he was a musician (or at least that's what people tell me). Both certainly warranted criticisms, though perhaps that's just the case with all awards shows these days: They are largely antithetical to the way we operate, after all: throwback, three-hour telecasts where brevity is encouraged but never really enforced. They are practically constructed to be deconstructed by bloggers the following morning, painfully un-hip, unapologetically huge and forced to appeal to the broadest of demographics. And yet (or probably because of all that), they routinely deliver viewership — this year's Grammys were watched by 39 million folks, the largest audience since 1984 — which means they're not going anywhere anytime soon ... if ever.

So if we're stuck with them, we might as well come to appreciate them. Neither the Oscars nor the Grammys are ever going to be perfect ... and this year, neither were. But when comparison is necessary (and given the scope of both, basically unavoidable), the Oscars came out on top, by a large margin. They did more with less, and did so with style to spare. And less Nicki Minaj. Then again, perhaps all of this just begs a larger question: Wouldn't it be nice if there were some alternatives out there? I wouldn't hold my breath for an answer, so in the mean time, I'm left to compare one bloviated, bloated awards show to another, even if they don't even merit comparison.

What awards show did you enjoy more this year: the Grammys or the Oscars? Leave your comment below!

Oscars 2012: My Night At Hollywood's Biggest Show

Brad and Angelina's wedding plan, talking to George Clooney and 3-D desserts are a few things we'll remember about this year's show.
By Josh Horowitz

On the red carpet for Sunday's Academy Awards
Photo: MTV News

So I guess this means the 2013 Academy Awards season has begun? I jest (kinda). But it seems like this past awards season lasted forever. I mean, it kind of did. Legit contenders had emerged by the time the Cannes film festival began last May. By now, I'm pretty sure the stars of "The Artist" are sick of the sounds of their own voices ... I mean, if they had spoken in the film. You know what I mean.

Last night was a fine sendoff to another fun awards season. I had a blast covering my fourth Oscars red carpet. It's always a true privilege to be a tiny part of something I've been obsessed with since I was old enough to watch TV. One of the true pleasures of doing the awards season circuit for MTV News is getting a chance to talk to some of the folks I've worshiped from afar for years, and this go-round was no different. Last night, Christopher Plummer, Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh and Nick Nolte all stopped to chat with me on the carpet. The 14-year-old Josh is very impressed.

And then there are the newbies. Rooney Mara, Jessica Chastain, even Shailene Woodley (unjustly looked over by the Academy) all were red-carpet regulars over the last few months and will surely be for many years to come.

It's hard to sum up a nearly four-hour red carpet in a few paragraphs, but here are a few select moments I'll look back on with a smile from the 84th Academy Awards red carpet.

George Clooney gets everyone excited. Perhaps the most embarrassing moment for me last night came when "Muppets" Best Song winner Bret McKenzie mentioned Clooney was nearby and I got embarrassingly excited. Like, too excited for a heterosexual man. Oh well, that guy is charming. Just take a look at our chat together.

Choose your questions for Angelina Jolie carefully. Of course, it was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who arrived last on the Oscars red carpet. Side note: Strangely, Christopher Lloyd arrived right around the same time. Anyway, Angelina was breezing by so the talk was quick, but damn, that lady is a movie star (I know, breaking news). She told me she thinks of her mom (now deceased) when she thinks of the Oscars since her Academy Award win was such a proud moment for her. Then, of course, I broke the mood by asking her if she and Brad planned their wedding to be a similar size as the Oscars. With a laugh she was on her way. Never got around to asking her and Brad to adopt me.

Wolfgang Puck serves food in 3-D. Who's been going to the Oscars for 18 years and is always the most popular guy at the Governors Ball? Why, celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck of course. He was my first interview of the night and might have been my favorite. At least the oddest. I think we also had our first fight as Wolfgang explained to me that he was serving a 3-D dessert this year while wearing those silly old-school glasses. I insisted all desserts are in 3-D. There was tension. And begrudging respect. I think.

You too can be nominated for an Oscar! OK, just to clarify, I'm not saying it's easy to get an Oscar nomination. But when an honest-to-goodness friend of yours gets one, it rocks your world a bit. Anything is possible! In this case I'm talking about Andrew Bowler, an old acquaintance from years past, who made it to the big show with his wife Gigi Causey for their great short film "Time Freak." Seeing Andrew enjoy his well-deserved big moment on the carpet was surreal and awesome. The movies are all about seeing dreams come to life, right?
